Things to Know When Choosing Your Martial Arts Academy | infrequently asked questions

  • How is my child's progress in school monitored (academic, behavioral, confidence, etc)?

We maintain consistent contact with each student’s teachers throughout the school year to learn more about their goals, challenges, and progress, so we can better support each child’s individual needs.

  • How is my child's progress at home monitored and enforced?

We have a system within our curriculum which allows us to partner with parents to hold children accountable. Instructors reinforce expectations set at home, and students advance in rank only when standards are met both on and off the mat.

  • Do I need to sign a contract?

All students sign a membership agreement, with flexible options to fit your needs. There is a $250 cancellation fee which relieves you of your legal obligation to pay your remaining balance in full. From an early age, students learn the value of commitment and follow-through — the commitment we expect of you is a reflection of the commitment you can expect from us.

  • Is the uniform included?

The uniform is a symbol of dedication and a belonging to our team — something to be earned not given. During your trial period, students will wear comfortable clothing and will have the opportunity to earn their White Belt when evaluated on the basics. If you choose to become a official member of our family, the uniform is included with your membership.

  • How often will I need to purchase a new uniform? What is the cost?

Only when you outgrow your current uniform ($60). A new uniform (with name embroidery) is required upon earning your Black Belt ($85).

  • How often will I need to purchase gear?

Sparring does not begin in our academy until Green Belt (approx. 1 year of training). The total for all required gear is $110 and individual items will only need to be replaced when outgrown.

  • How much are testing fees?

Testing Fees range from $40-$50 and cover costs associated with hosting our Promotional Testings (quarterly). The cost for a Black Belt evaluation ranges from $75-$100. Some academies may not charge testing fees; which is oftentimes a marketing tactic and a reflection of how rank promotion is not standardized. Others may charge hundreds even $1000+. Ours reflects the time, preparation, and resources that go into providing a fair, high-quality testing experience.

  • Can a student fail a test?

Yes. After 3-6 months of training, we provide an honest evaluation of each student’s readiness, based on consistency in effort and attendance. Our goal is not to avoid failure, but to build resilience and a healthy mindset through it. If you fail a test in school, you receive your grade and move on to the next chapter. In training—and in life— you adapt, you try again, you persevere, and you learn from your experiences.

  • How long does it take to get to Black Belt?

Our Black Belt represents mastery of the basics; typically taking 4–5 years with consistent training. Academies that guarantee rapid promotion in less than 3 years tend to prioritize business over true skill and efficiency.

  • Can I pause my monthly payments?

In order to keep up with year-round operating expenses, billing continues during time off. Time missed will be noted and your membership will be extended accordingly so that you get back the time that was paid for.

  • How flexible is the schedule?

We offer classes 5 days per week at various times. Each membership includes unlimited classes and rather than a set schedule, students may attend whichever days work best on any given week. Our recommendation is 2-3 days per week

  • How big are class sizes?

In order to reach individualized goals, we must provide individualized attention. Enrollment pauses when 4 or more new students are in their trial period. Our Little Dragons program (ages 4–6) is capped at 15 members to maintain small class sizes and personalized instruction.

  • Do you teach a traditional style or modern self defense?

It is a combination of traditional forms, striking, sparring, and throwing. Our academy maintains the traditions, values, standards, and practices of traditional taekwondo while incorporating realistic hands-on self defense skills and concepts from other Korean & Japanese styles.

  • What organization does your academy belong to?

Over the past 20 years, our academy has been part of a few organizations; leaving each when our core values no longer aligned. While we currently maintain our independence, we still collaborate and compete with schools and organizations worldwide. This independence allows us the authority to improve our curriculum and structure to focus on what truly benefits our students. Unlike some schools that pay thousands for a brand name, we believe high-quality training comes from experience and dedication — not affiliation or fees.
